I swear there was a moment on Film ‘86
when Barry Norman was caught on camera
falling in love with Meryl Streep.
It was that scene from Out of Africa when
Robert Redford washed her hair
in the open air.
Barry took a second too long
turning back to camera before simply saying
with a wry, guilty smile,
“Stunning”.
I didn’t know then
it would be our first date movie,
or that our story could ever feel
like a big screen version of ourselves.
“Walking on Sunshine” our theme song
to a tumbled romance montage;
just two weeks from first kiss to proposal,
only twenty four more until marriage.
Your family and mine supporting actors,
Granddads played characterful cameos.
It all goes to show how perfect casting
can make a story come alive,
especially when only you saw me
as leading man material.
I still rerun the memories
now we‘re attending second generation weddings.
Compare their vows with ours;
you in watermarked satin,
me in a smile
Barry Norman would recognise.
